Interstate Electrical Wins National Excellence in Construction Award for Philips Exeter Academy Center Project
Interstate Electrical Services Corporation, the largest merit shop electrical services contractor in New England has received national recognition for it’s role in the renovation/construction of Philips Exeter Academy’s new Academy Center. Interstate was awarded an Excellence in Construction Award by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). ABC's Excellence award recognizes outstanding construction projects across the nation, and signifies that the project represents the best of the best for safety, quality, teamwork, planning and innovation. Interstate previously was awarded an Excellence in Construction award by the New Hampshire/Vermont chapter of ABC. Placing in local competition is a prerequisite for entering a project in the national competition.
The Academy Center project consisted of extensive renovation and expansion of the Thompson Science Building, located in the center of the historic campus. This LEED certified project involved replacing the entire electrical distribution and fire alarm system, as well as the installation of a complex lighting system. Because the project spanned the school year, safety was also an important theme; the Excellence in Construction Award in part recognizes Interstates leadership role in insuring the safety of both workers and students during construction.
Shawmut Design and Building of Boston, Massachusetts was the general contractor for the project and RFS Engineering was the commissioning agent responsible for LEEDS compliance and certification.
“This is a first for us, “commented James Alibrandi, President and COO of Interstate Electrical Services Corporation. “We have won numerous excellence awards in local chapter competitions, and have received merit awards at the national level, but this is the first time that we came home with a national excellence award. Everyone at Interstate from the executive team to the apprentices in the field work hard to promote a culture that encourages excellence at all levels; safety, teamwork, quality workmanship, and leadership. This award is recognition that as a company we are definitely on the right track.
What does it take to become a national Excellence in Construction Award winner?
First, the project has to win an Excellence in Construction (Eagle) award at the local ABC chapter where it competes with many other entries for a single award.
As a first place winner, the project is eligible for entry into the National competition where it is judged among Excellence winners from the other 50 ABC chapters.
Only one project out of the 50 entered per category is selected by a panel of judges to receive this coveted Eagle award.
